The Negroni was born in early 20th-century Italy, most famously in Florence around 1919. As the story goes, Count Camillo Negroni asked his bartender to strengthen his favourite Americano (Campari, sweet vermouth and soda) by replacing the soda water with gin. The result was a perfectly balanced blend of bitter Campari, herbal vermouth and botanical gin, creating a cocktail that was bold bracing and unmistakably red.
From its origins at Caffè Casoni, the Negroni travelled from Italian aperitivo culture to become one of the world’s most iconic classic cocktails, celebrated for its simplicity, symmetry and timeless sophistication.
